Sydney’s Western area is one of the powerhouses of the Australian economy. The economic growth in the area is unprecedented and Western Sydney is the second CBD of Sydney and is the third largest economy in Australia. Western Sydney has the most multicultural suburbs in the country with around 38% of the population speaking a language other than English at home. As it is an economic powerhouse, the people of GWS are predominantly working-class, employed mainly in the heavy industries and vocational trades.
Although Western Sydney is mainly flat, it is nonetheless home to significant cultural and natural spaces such as important areas of national parks, waterways and parklands, agricultural lands, natural bushland and a range of recreational and sporting facilities. The Hawkesbury and Nepean River system is Sydney's firsthand water source and the mainstay of the region's agricultural and fishing industries. It is also the major recreational area for the residents of Greater Western Sydney. The heritage-listed Warragamba dam is the primary reservoir for water supply for Sydney and is located to the greater west.
It has a wealth of sporting activities which cover a host of disciplines. Major Australian teams are represented here such as the Greater Western Sydney Giants for Rugby, Sydney Blue Sox for Baseball and the Western Sydney Ice Dogs for Ice Hockey.
Culturally, there is a vast selection of activities to choose from. It houses some of the finest museums in the country such as the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, the Museum of Fire, the Museums Discovery Centre and the NSW Rail Museum. It has a host of parks such as the Blaxland Riverside Park, the Australian Botanic Gardens, Bicentennial Park and the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
Public transport in Greater Western Sydney is provided by an extensive network of operating modes including suburban rail, light rail, buses, and ferries. The network will soon include a mode of rapid transit, with the new Sydney Metro opening in early 2019.
